During a tour of communities across the Galloway region of the diocese earlier this week, Bishop Kevin visited Gatehouse Primary School with the Rev Canon Stephen Hazlett, Rector of St Mary’s, Gatehouse of Fleet and Greyfriars, Kirkcudbright.
They were warmly welcomed by headteacher John Riley and members of staff, had a tour of the school, and addressed an assembly of P6/7 pupils. Many of the children had assisted in St Mary’s Harvest celebration last year, decorating the church in their own creative style.
Bishop Kevin shared with the children about his work and ministry in the Diocese, speaking about bishops being shepherds of the flock, prompting some of the pupils to recognise his crozier as a shepherd’s crook.
The children were invited to question him, which they did with enthusiasm. Bishop Kevin was asked how often he prayed and whether he had any other hats (mitres) apart from the gold one he wore on the day. The students were impressed that he looks after over fifty communities across the diocese.
The Bishop thoroughly enjoyed his time at the school, he was almost late for the following service at St Mary’s!
